At the beginning of Russia’s invasion and the start of the war on Ukraine, I wanted to paint a tribute piece in hopes it would help in some way. First I needed to know more about Ukraine and its people. I read about Ukraine and used my VR to walk the streets of this vast beautiful country. Through my VR, I saw recordings of families in city squares, green fields, and beautiful historic buildings. In contrast, watching present day news, from a world away, I felt quite emotional and helpless at the toll the war was placing on this magnificent place. The news shared a country of courageous men and women standing in defense of their families and homes. Parents with young children were shown trying to escape or taking cover from the horror engulfing their world. In one TV interview, a soldier was sharing his story when I noticed behind him on the wall a coat of arms with a bird flying upwards. That’s when the vision of “Ukraine Rises” formed in my mind. I would like to share my process with you.

The beauty of Ukraine is represented in the green fields and blue skies. I added sunflowers due to its historic association within the Ukrainian people. Next was the reverent shaping of the Ukrainian flag. After ripping and shaping the 5 layers of acrylic paint created on plastic, I then transferred what was to be the flag to the canvas. I hoped to portray the forced stress that’s been placed on this beautiful country. The phoenix, representing a stronger rebirth out of ashes. Flying fiercely out of the rubble. The rising phoenix burns with an unstoppable fire while bleeding Ukrainian colors from its tail, speaking as if this power was forged by the courage of the people. In addition, the word courage is displayed above.

It is my hope that you the viewer of this piece can feel the sacrifice already given, the overflowing strength, determination, and courage that burns within all who stands with Ukraine. Only then can you listen to the echo’s that will steadily grow to a shout, “Ukraine Rises!”
